Bachelor of Sacred Music Degree (BSM)

Program Summary

The Bachelor of Sacred Music is available to students in the areas of voice, keyboard or non-keyboard instruments. This program focuses on music in the context of a broader program of general studies. The primary goals are the development of basic musicianship, and a set of principles and terms that lead to a fuller intellectual grasp of the art.

The Bachelor of Sacred Music is designed to enable students to:

1.    Prepare musicians for worship ministry in the church.
2.    Equip those preparing for music and worship leadership with theological and liturgical understanding along with increased music skills.
3.    Provide study alongside peers who will later form pastor and musician teams for worship leadership.
4.    Give opportunity for studying other ministry skills along with the worship and music concentration.
5.    Assume positions of positive leadership as musicians in the evangelical church.


The program requires a minimum of 120 credits for graduation:



* Field Education Requirements:

The student must complete one student ministry placement per semester in their fourth year. Student achievement is assessed and becomes part of the students overall grade point average.

Course Descriptions

Music Department Courses

Preliminary Theory A:
This class will introduce students to the basics of the language of music. Students will study comprehension of written music and gain the ability to play simple musical notation on the keyboard. This course will prepare students for Preliminary Theory 2. Students may be exempt from Preliminary Theory 1 by writing the final exam for the class and scoring a grade better than 65%.


Preliminary Theory B [Preliminary Rudiments]:
This course serves as an introduction to the understanding of the basic elements of musical notation. This course will prepare students for the RCM Preliminary Rudiments Examination and they must pass this exam in order to obtain full credit for the course.

PREREQUISITE: Preliminary Theory A, exemption or consent of the instructor.

Theory 1 [Grade 1 Rudiments]:
This course is a continuation of Preliminary Rudiments, with further emphasis on musicianship development, and is designed to develop a strong theoretical foundation. As a result of this course, students will be expected to write the RCM Grade 1 Rudiments Examination in order to obtain full credit (2 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Preliminary Theory B, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Theory 2 [Grade 2 Rudiments]:
This course further develops the students knowledge of the Grade 1 Rudiments material. Students will be expected to demonstrate gained theoretical knowledge at the keyboard as well as in written form. As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the RCM Grade 2 Rudiments Examination in order to obtain full credit (2 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Theory 1, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Theory 3A [Grade 3 Harmony - Part 1]:
Introduction to common practice harmony, including elementary analysis and discussion of elements of counterpoint and choral texture.

PREREQUISITE: Theory 2, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Theory 3B [Grade 3 Harmony - Part 2]:
Introduction to common practice harmony, including elementary analysis and discussion of elements of counterpoint and choral texture. As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the RCM Grade 3 Harmony Examination in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Theory 3A, exemption or consent of the instructor

Theory 4A [Grade 4 Harmony - Part 1]:
A further study of chords and chord relationships, involving the identification, analysis, modulation and substitution of both diatonic and non-diatonic chords.

PREREQUISITE: Theory 3B, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Theory 4B [Grade 4 Harmony - Part 2]:
A further study of chords and chord relationships, involving the identification, analysis, modulation and substitution of both diatonic and non-diatonic chords. As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the RCM Grade 4 Harmony Examination in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Theory 4A, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Theory 5 [Grade 4 Counterpoint]:
Materials covered in Theory 4 will be further studied, including the contrapuntal writing style of the Baroque period. As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the Royal Conservatory Grade 4 Counterpoint Exam in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Theory 4B, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Theory 6 [Grade 5 Harmony]:
Further examination of chords and chord relationships in addition to counterpoint harmonization and modulation will be studied. As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the Royal Conservatory Grade 5 Harmony Exam in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Theory 5, exemption or consent of the instructor.



Theory 7A & 7B [Grade 5 Analysis]:
Students will learn how to provide comprehensive harmonic and structural analysis including the study of various musical forms and elements. As a result of these classes, students will be expected to write the Royal Conservatory Grade 5 Analysis Exam in order to obtain full credit. Please note these are two session classes which require one day per week each (3 hour exam).

Keyboard 1:
This course provides study of the basics of keyboarding skills. No prerequisites required.


Ear Training 1:
This course will introduce the student to basic ear-training and sight-singing skills. Chords will be introduced in audible and written form. As a result of this course, the student will develop key recognition skills, will be able to sight-sing simple melodies and be able to clap and sing rhythms in simple and compound time.

PREREQUISITE: Preliminary Theory B, exemption or consent of the instructor.


Ear Training 2:
This course is a continuation of Ear-Training 1 with a further emphasis on advanced interval recognition and sight singing of entire short songs. Each class will involve rhythmic drills to further develop ear training and sight singing skills.

PREREQUISITE: Ear-Training 1


Grade 3 History A & B:
The Grade 3 History examination is based on an introduction to music history through an overview of four historical style periods: the Baroque, Classical and Romantic Eras and the 20th century.

As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the Royal Conservatory Grade 3 History Exam in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Grade 2 Rudiments. This is also a corequisite for the Grade 9 Practical Examinations.


Grade 4 History A & B:
The Grade 4 History examination is based on four historical style periods - the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque and Classical Eras - with emphasis on the development of musical genres and forms.

As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the Royal Conservatory Grade 4 History Exam in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Grade 2 Rudiments, Grade 3 Harmony and Grade 3 History. This is also required as a co-requisite for the Grade 10 Practical Examinations.

Grade 5 History A & B:
The Grade 5 History examination is based on the music styles of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Canadian music.

As a result of this class, students will be expected to write the Royal Conservatory Grade 5 History Exam in order to obtain full credit (3 hour exam).

PREREQUISITE: Grade 2 Rudiments, Grade 4 Harmony and Grade 4 History. This is also required as a co-requisite for the A.R.C.T. Practical Examinations.


Worship 1:
The student will explore the theology behind heart of praise and worship and becoming a worshipper.

No prerequisites required.


Worship 2:
The student will learn to develop the ministry of Leading of Praise and Worship with an emphasis on the practical, including the art of leading worship, the role of the Pastor, the musicians and other enhancing elements.

No prerequisites required.


Songwriting 1:
This introductory course will be a practical study designed to help the student develop her/his writing ability. Most of the time spent in class will be actually writing or evaluating writing. Good song structure, melody and lyric writing will be studied. Students will have a basic understanding of good writing technique upon completion of this course.

The ability to play piano or guitar and accompany your own songs will be an asset but is not mandatory.

PREREQUISITE: English Grammar and Composition 1 and Preliminary Theory B plus a good command of English or the consent of the instructor.


Songwriting 2:
This is a continuation of Songwriting 1 and will build upon the introductory principals presented in that course.

The ability to play piano or guitar and accompany your own songs will be an asset but is not mandatory.

PREREQUISITE: Songwriting 1, a good command of English or the consent of the instructor.

Drama 1:
This course enables you to use drama as a means of communication. You will learn the fundamental elements of dramatization including theory, creation and analysis. You will develop techniques such as using imagination, story telling, body awareness and improvisation.


Guitar 1:
This course provides study of the basics of guitar skills.

No prerequisites required.


Guitar 2:
This course is a continuation of Guitar 1.

PREREQUISITE: Guitar 1 or consent of the instructor if the student already has basic guitar skills.


Applied Music Series [Private Lessons]:
Lessons are offered in piano, voice, and other instruments (as instructors are available). Students must have six semesters of weekly half-hour lessons. Each semester comprises of 12 private lessons. The minimum practice requirement is one hour per day. Students who have private instructors outside of Canada Christian College must have their instructor fill out a Private Instructor Form to provide proof of lessons in order for student to receive credit. Students may register for lessons in the Music Office, prior to college registration dates.

Private lessons fees depend on the instructor. These courses are worth 1 credit each towards the degree requirements. Private lessons are arranged, through the Music Department, with professional musicians in the greater Toronto area.

No special fees are charged for recordings, materials or for using college-owned instruments.


Music Ensemble Series:
Music Ensemble is designed to simulate all activities required to produce success in the real church world. Student will work together in various groups to provide music based upon teamwork. Theoretical knowledge will be implemented. The practical elements of music will be emphasized. Students of all levels will participate in the class.

PREREQUISITE: No Prerequisite required. This class is open to all Canada Christian College Students. Auditions may be required.

Refund Policy:

A full refund may be given ONLY if student drops the course by the first day of the semester. After the first day of the semester no refund will be given.


Canada Christian College also offers all of the courses leading to the internatianally recognized A.R.C.T. Diploma (Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto)


Audio Recording Department Courses:

Audio Recording 1:
This course is for those students who wish to get into the fascinating world of audio recording arts. Students will learn and study in detail all the components that are involved in recording.


Audio Recording 2:
This course is a continuation of Audio Recording 1 and will explore the world of audio recording through hands-on study.

PREREQUISITE: Audio Recording 1 or consent of the instructor.


Audio Recording 3:
This course is a continuation of Audio Recording 2. Students will utilize the techniques gained in Audio Recording 1 and 2 to produce a project in the recording studio. They will be expected to demonstrate a working knowledge of all of the gear in the studio including those techniques listed in Audio Recording 2.

PREREQUISITE: Audio Recording 2 or consent of the instructor.


Live Audio Mixing:
This is a continuation of Audio Recording 3 and it is for those students who wish to learn and produce a live production. Students will be able to run and understand how a live sound system is set up. Students will utilize the techniques gained in Audio Recording 3 and will interact and gain more experience and practice with projects in the recording studio. Students will study mixing techniques, music styles, dealing with customers, working with a producer, video and television production. The student will burn a final project or portfolio of sessions and mixes on to a CD.

Music Industry 1:
Discover what happens in the Music Industry! This course will give students advanced knowledge of various aspects of today’s Music Industry.


Music Industry 2:
This course is offers additional information regarding today’s Music Industry. There are no prerequisites required however Music Industry 1 is highly recommended.
