English as a Second
Language Certificate Program
The English
as a Second Language (ESL) Certificate program
at Canada Christian College is
designed to provide international students and others with an opportunity to
increase their English language skills. Our dedicated staff of
instructors help students overcome language barriers for
self-improvement, academic achievement, and to increase
their employability in the job market.
Our friendly, professional staff works
closely with each
student to provide an approach to learning based on
individual needs. Students are given a Placement Test before
starting the program to determine their strengths and
weaknesses in understanding, speaking, reading and writing
English. Once their individual learning requirements are
identified, students begin the ESL program at the
level of
training required to achieve their English language goals.
At Canada Christian
College, there are four distinct levels
of learning in the ESL program:
ESL 1 PROGRAM
This basic ESL training level is designed for those who need
instruction in basic English grammar, vocabulary
development, reading and writing. This program is designed
to lay a basic foundation for the student by providing them
with guided practice in speaking and listening . It provides
students with a practical, working knowledge of English and
is designed to help them to quickly achieve functional
language skills.
ESL 2 PROGRAM
This introductory level of ESL training is designed for
students who have the rudimentary knowledge of English. It
builds on the previous level by developing the student’s
reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students are
introduced to activities that require interaction with
instructors and other students in an English speaking
environment. The practice of real-life language is the
emphasis of this learning level.
ESL 3 PROGRAM
This intermediate level program is designed to increase the
student’s proficiency in speaking English. Their language
skills and knowledge are refined as they participate in special
games, role-playing, group activities and class exercises. This
level prepares them to function in an English speaking
environment.
ESL 4 PROGRAM
This advanced level of ESL training is for students who have
obtained proficiency in English but need to “fine-tune” their
language skills. Students improve their speaking and
listening skills by learning proper pronunciation of English
words, phrases and sentences. Writing and reading skills are
developed to a more advanced level as they learn how to
write English using proper grammar and punctuation. This
level prepares students to effortlessly merge in an English
speaking cultural environment at work, college, or in business.
All of the levels of instruction listed above are:
Student Centered
At Canada Christian College, we believe that the learning
needs of each individual student must be addressed to
achieve success. We provide a friendly, stress-free learning
environment where students can focus on developing their
language skills.
Practical
and Sensible
Students are motivated to develop language skills through
practical application of English in real-life situations they
encounter each day. Group activities, such as day trips, help
them to become familiar with real-life situations in an English
speaking environment.
Interactive
and Real Life
Students interact on a one-on-one basis, supporting and
helping each other to develop their skills. They work with
ESL Instructors and participate in games, events,
activities
and role-playing exercises designed to build their skill and
confidence. Students use various English language materials,
tapes and literature to prepare them to interact successfully
in any English language based culture or community.
Biblically
Centered
Students learn and interact in an evangelical Christian
environment where they learn to communicate and adapt to
real life situations in a Christ-centred context.
Note: TOEFL training
courses are available for graduates of the ESL
Certificate program
who want to go on to university.
